New Zealand golfers Caroline Bon and Wendy Hawkes are one step away from earning their playing cards for next year's Ladies European Tour (LET) after today progressing to the final event of qualifying school.
Both players carded even-par rounds of 71 under pressure in the fourth and final round of the pre-qualifying school event on the North course at La Manga Club in Cartagena, Murcia, Spain, overnight (NZT) to finish in a tie for 20th at eight-over par for the tournament.
The top 35 players from their side of the draw won the right to compete in the final q-school event at the same venue from December 15-20, when 30 spots for full playing rights on the LET will be up for grabs.
Bon and Hawkes started the final round in a tie for 16th and played steady golf today, Bon carding three birdies and three bogeys while Hawkes mixed two birdies with two bogeys.
Compatriot Sarah Nicholson missed the cut, however, shooting a three-over par 74 today to finish at 16-over, two shots outside the top-35 on the same side of the draw.
On the other side, Angela Hawkes ended a horror week with a nine-over par 82 on the South course, finishing the week at 51-over par and last of the players who completed the tournament.
The field of 165 had been split into two fields which were competing over the North and South courses on alternate days and, after four rounds, the leading 70 players and ties - 35 from each side of the draw - progressed to the final q-school event.
