Fourteen-year-old Michelle Wie grabbed the headlines by finishing fourth in the Kraft Nabisco Championship, one of the major tournaments on the LPGA tour, but there was a remarkable effort by a player who finished well behind her.
JoAnne Carner, who turned 65 yesterday, made the cut and earned US$3457 ($5187) for her 56th placing. Wie has yet to win an LPGA event as an amateur. Carner was the last person to achieve that feat when she won the Burdines Invitational in Miami in 1969.
She won five US amateur championships and didn't turn pro until she was 30. She has won two US Women's Opens and 42 LPGA events.
Carner played in Auckland in 1975 in the women's professional tournament staged at The Grange course. The tournament was won by Aussie Jane Lock.
