Josh Geary eagled his closing hole at the NZ PGA to tie for the lead midway through the tournament.
First round leader Kristopher Mueck added a 68 and looked as though he would head the field into the weekend until Geary made his miraculous last hole heroics.
He pushed his drive well right of the 18th fairway and then hooked his iron over trees in front of him into an awkward lie at the back of the green and holed his difficult 25m chip.
"I had a line to the back right part of the green with a high hook, hoping to get it in the bunker maybe and getting it up and down. I ended up in the back swale and somehow managed to hole it."
Geary matched his opening round 66 with his collection of four birdies and an eagle in a bogey free round. He will begin his attack on the title tomorrow morning with organisers moving the tee times up because of the poor weather forecasts.
