TULSA, Oklahoma - Sergio Garcia was disqualified from the US PGA Championship on Saturday for signing an incorrect scorecard.
The 27-year-old Spaniard recorded a par four at the 358-yard 17th when in fact he bogeyed the hole.
Garcia, who lost a playoff to Irishman Padraig Harrington at last month's British Open, returned a four-over 74 in the third round at Southern Hills Country Club after bogeying the last two holes.
The Spaniard was not available for comment after hastily leaving the course but his American playing partner Boo Weekley conceded he had been responsible for writing down the incorrect score at the 17th.
"It's my fault for putting the wrong score in but it's his fault for not checking it," Weekley, who kept Garcia's card during the round, told reporters.
"I said to him: 'Sergio, I put a four but in fact you had a five.' He said to me: 'That just puts the icing on the cake'."
In attempt to rectify the situation, Weekley called Garcia back to the scoring tent after his card had been signed but officials said there was no going back once the players had left the area.
It is the first time Garcia, a six-times European Tour winner, has been disqualified from a major championship in 37 appearances.
