Grant Waite has joined fellow New Zealanders David Smail and Michael Campbell in the field for next week's United States Open at the Olympia Fields course in Chicago.
Waite, who carded rounds of 68 and 73, tied for fourth yesterday in a gruelling 36-hole sectional qualifier at the Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando, Florida. Only the top five players from the event qualified for the Open.
But fellow Kiwi Craig Perks, also in the field at Lake Nona, failed in his bid to qualify and Phil Tataurangi withdrew from his scheduled qualifying tournament.
Rain has delayed the qualifying bids of Steven Alker and Eddie Lee.
The pair are attempting to qualify at a tournament in Rockville, Maryland, but the weather forced the postponement of the event with many of the field failing to finish.
Waite, a 10-year veteran of the PGA Tour, who failed to keep his card this year, has been playing the second tier Nationwide tour. Waite is best remembered as the winner of the 1993 Kemper Open.
Waite and Alker are in the field for this week's PGA Tour event, the Capitol Open (formerly the Kemper Open).
Top qualifiers at Lake Nona were European tour professional Maarten Lafeber and American golfer Matt Seppanen who each posted a five-under par 139.
