Two Auckland men and the Filipino women set the tone with foursomes victories on the opening day of the New Zealand amateur golf championships at Russley Golf Club in Christchurch yesterday.
Royal Auckland's Fraser Wilkin and Sam An, of Titirangi, combined for a one-under par total of 143 to win the men's foursomes by one shot from Owen Burgess and Mark O'Malley and Keelan Kilpatrick and Cameron Jones, while the Filipino duo of Sarah Jane Ababa and Jayvie Agojo took 153 shots in winning the women's title by one stroke from Julianne Alvarez and Barbara Parreno.
The men's pair from Auckland were happy to claim their first national title and their own part of New Zealand golf history.
"It is pretty awesome to have our names on a New Zealand Golf trophy," said Wilkin, 23. "It is the perfect start to the week."
More than 150 amateurs will tee up from today with the chance of national glory in the men's and women's strokeplay championships.
