Golf: Eagles fly but just one ace

The New Zealand Open produced 35 eagles over the four days, but just one hole-in-one.

That came from Australian Andre Stolz, whose ace came at the 126m par-three 16th during the second round on Friday.

Just two players managed more than one eagle, former New Zealand Eisenhower Trophy winner Grant Moorhead and Tiger Woods.

Both of Moorhead's came on the 457m par-five seventh on the first two days, and Woods collected his on the 283m par-four sixth on Saturday and the 500m par-five 12th yesterday.

When Craig Parry was presented with his winnings at the Open, he thanked a champagne-maker for the magnum he was holding.

The only problem was it turned out to be a certain well-known New Zealand beer.

Returning to the podium, the stocky Parry eyed his stomach and remarked that "you don't get this way by just looking at the stuff."

The TAB took $350,000 in bets on the Open, topping the previous best for a golf tournament, the British Open last year, which clocked up $203,000.

Having Tiger Woods at the Open and a wide range of betting options combined to produce the splurge, according to the TAB.

The Ronald McDonald House and the AMP Golf Foundation were left to rue Michael Campbell's missed eagle putt on the 18th hole last night.

The two organisations were to split Campbell's winnings.

Had he gone to a playoff with Australian Craig Parry and won, there would have been $180,000 to be shared.

Instead, Campbell finished joint runner-up, picking up $72,500.
