A late meltdown took New Zealander Michael Hendry to a one under par 69 after the first round of the Australian Open at The Lakes Course in Sydney today.
Hendry started with a bang from the 10th tee, hitting three birdies in his first nine holes. But a double bogey on the par three ninth hole, his only blemish, was a disappointment.
Australian Jarrod Lyle leads the tournament on seven under, with American Dustin Johnson second on six under. Korean Kim Woo-Hyun, currently on five under through 13 holes, is mounting a challenge to the clubhouse leaders.
Hendry's fellow New Zealanders Gareth Paddison and Michael Long are even after 12 and two holes respectively. Josh Carmichael is one over after 16 holes. Phil Tataurangi and Mahal Pearce are one over after 13. Brad Shilton is two over after 16. David Klein is three over after 15. Michael Campbell finished the day in five over par after shooting a 77.
New Zealanders Steve Alker and Doug Holloway have yet to tee off.
