KEY POINTS:
New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell saved his worst until last to tumble backwards at the US Open today.
Campbell carded a closing round of nine over-par 79 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania to enter the clubhouse tied for 59th.
Having started the year's second major with rounds of 73, 77 and 75, Campbell needed something extraordinary today to thrust himself up the leaderboard.
Instead, he found the going tough, and struggled to get any momentum after posting a bogey five at the first hole.
Another five bogeys followed while the 2005 US Open champion's card included two double bogeys and a lone birdie, at the par-three 13th.
