Kiwi golfer Michael Campbell is well off the pace after the opening round at the Dubai Desert Classic overnight.
Campbell faces an uphill battle to make his third straight cut in 2013 after hitting a one-over 73 to sit in a tie for 101st place.
He is 11 shots back from leader Richard Sterne of South Africa, who fired a 10-under 62.
The former US Open champion has been in a rich vein of form following two top 20 finishes in Abu Dhabi and Qatar to sit in 45th on the Race to Dubai standings.
