Golf: Campbell heads home top of European money list

US Open golf champion Michael Campbell heads home at the top of the European money list after the Players Championship of Europe ended in Germany today.

Campbell retained his position after finishing in a share of 14th place in the rich European event won by New Zealand Open champion Niclas Fasth of Sweden in a three-hole play-off.

It was another solid performance from Campbell, who collected $90,000 for his efforts.

He and his family will arrive Auckland on Wednesday.

The only other New Zealander to win a major, 65-year-old Bob Charles, finished in a share of 56th place at the Senior British Open in Aberdeen today.

Charles closed with his best round, a two-over par 73 for a four-round tally of 303.

Lynnette Brooky finished in a share of 44th place in the Evian Masters in France following a roller coaster ride. The sixth ranked player on the European women's tour shared the lead after a stunning first round six-under par 66 before a disastrous second round eight-over 80.

She closed with a one-over 73 for a 72-hole total of 293.

Michael Long enjoyed a solid performance in the USPGA Tour event, US Bank Championship in Milwaukee.

The Perth-based New Zealander shot a final round one-over par 71 for a four round tally of 274, six-under par for a share of the 40th place.

Long was in a share of 32nd place overnight but started slowly to be three-over after seven holes before making birdies at the ninth and 15th. Top amateurs Josh Geary and Brad Iles, both of Tauranga, have finished in a share of 25th place at the Porter Cup tournament in the US.

Iles raced home with a final round three-under par 67 while Geary shot a 72 as both finished on one-over par 281.

They now head to the US Amateur Championship qualifying tournament.
