Former US Open golf champion Michael Campbell's strong start on the opening day of the Mercedes-Benz Championship lasted just four holes in Cologne yesterday. Campbell raced to within a stroke of the lead after he birdied the second and fourth holes. But his troubles returned at the par four fifth hole and he eventually ended the round tied in equal third last in the 78-player, no-cut tournament. Compatriot Mark Brown fared little better, managing just one birdie in a three over 75. Denmark's Soren Hansen, winner of the event two years ago, leads the field by a stroke after carding a seven-under 65.
