New Zealand's Michael Campbell produced his best round of golf in more than two years as he carded a five-under par 67 at the Portugal Masters overnight.
Campbell had five birdies and was bogey-free on the Oceanico Victoria course in Vilamoura, finishing the first round in a tie for eighth.
Swedes Robert Karlsson and Johan Edfors, and Dutchman Martin Lafeber, lead the tournament after the trio each fired eight-under par rounds of 64 in the European Tour event.
Campbell has missed 16 of 17 cuts this year and won just $NZ25,200 since January 1.
Mark Brown, the other New Zealander in the field, is tied for 36th after an opening round three-under par 69.
