Michael Campbell's timing is spot-on, says NZ Golf chief executive Larry Graham, who is about to go into talks with prospective sponsors for next year's New Zealand Open.
"We also hope to talk to the Government and get them behind the Open.
"They dabbled in this year's tournament. Now I want them to give greater support.
"This [Campbell's US triumph] could not be a better advertisement for New Zealand."
Graham is certain Campbell will be at Gulf Harbour for the Open, which will be played from January 26-29 - a fortnight earlier than this year's tournament, in which Campbell failed to make the cut.
"I spoke to Michael a few days ago ... He confirmed his availability for the Open," said Graham.
"When the dust settles we will talk to him again. He was happy with the way the Open was run and with the co-sanctioning arrangements with the European Tour."
On the vexed question of appearance money, Graham said: "We have a policy of no appearance money. That is something we will now sit down with our mates in Australian golf and reconsider.
"If we need to review our policy to assure a top-class field, we will do it.
"We want to give New Zealanders the chance to see the best golfers in the world."
Golf: 'Best ad for NZ golf' well timed
