Canterbury rep Jordan Bakermans shot a three-under par 69 at the Timaru Golf Club to establish a five-shot lead after two rounds of the South Island under-19 championship.
The Christchurch Golf Club member, who opened with a four-under par 68, made five birdies and two bogeys to move five clear of Jason Yoo (Waitikiri) who carded successive rounds of 71 yesterday.
Jordan Green (Ashburton) is in outright third, a further two shots back from Yoo on an even par total.
Meanwhile in the women's field, Jesse Hamilton has moved into the lead after a three-over par 76 in the second round.
The Auckland rep, who last year became the first New Zealand golfer to win the world masters of junior golf tournament in the 15-17 year old age division in Nevada, leads Waikato rep Fai Thongdesthri by three shots.
