Golf: Another top-20 finish for Campbell

Michael Campbell has finished in a share of 16th place after fading in the final round of the Qatar Masters with a two over par 74 at the Doha Golf Club.

The 43-year-old, who carded three rounds of 68 to get to a 12 under par total and only three shots off the lead, finished eight shots back from the champion Englishman Chris Wood who carded a three under par 69 to win by one stroke.

Campbell, who finished tied 17th last week at the Abu Dhabi Championship, earned €23,786 and climbed 14 places on the Race to Dubai Standings to 45.

The former US Open champion got off to a slow start as he made bogeys in the opening two holes. He got one back when he made birdie on the third but dropped another shot on six to make the turn in two over par 38.

He dropped to four over par when he made successive bogeys on 15 and 16 but birdied the final two holes to sign for a 74 and record another top-20 finish.

Campbell's statistics early in the year tell the story. His stroke average in 2013 is 69.88 compared 72.28 in 2012 and at his worst 76.08 in 2010.

He is averaging 28.29 putts per round compared to 30.13 per round in 2011 and 30.52 in 2012.

The eight time winner on the European Tour has been on a steady comeback since the middle of the 2012 season -where he recorded a third place finish in Portugal and a tie for eighth in Hong Kong.

He is still looking for his first victory since the World Match Play at Wentworth in 2005.

It is a fine comeback from Campbell who during his career slump fell outside the Official World Golf Ranking's top 900 after injury problems and a loss of form.
