Kiwi golfer Steven Alker has put himself in a strong position to earn a card for next season's PGA Tour after he finished second in a playoff at the Boise Open on the Web.com Tour today.
Alker was in 19th spot on the second-tier tour's order of merit heading in to this weekend's event in Idaho but his effort has elevated him inside the top 10 and means he should finish inside the top 25 to punch his ticket to the main event for the 2014/2015 season.
The Hamilton professional, who had missed his past three cuts on tour after winning the Cleveland Open last month, brought a two-stroke lead in to the final round today and carded a four-under 67. The 42-year-old and American Steve Wheatcroft (65) both finished the week at 24-under as they went to a playoff.
Alker, who has won four times on the Web.com Tour, had claimed three of his previous titles in playoffs but could only make par on the first playoff hole, while Wheatcroft made birdie and claimed the spoils.
There are nine tournaments left on the Web.com Tour this season with the final event taking place in September.
