Lynnette Brooky returned to her best form at the $A500,000 ($618,276) ANZ Ladies Masters on Queensland's Gold Coast, sitting outright second after the opening round at the Royal Pines course yesterday.
The Wellingtonian played her round late in the day when the wind became more persistent but still shot a six-under 66 to leave her one stroke behind England's Diane Barnard.
Brooky was easily the best golfer in the afternoon half of the field.
She was one shot clear of a group of three big names - Sweden's Sofie Gustafson, Scotland's Kathryn Marshall and world No 1 Australian Karrie Webb, chasing her fourth consecutive title.
Kerrin Starr was the next-best New Zealander, tied for 21st place after shooting a one-under 71, a shot ahead of compatriot Shelley Duncan.
