Glenn Maxwell: 'You're a jerk... I averaged two'

Australia's one-day international (ODI) player of the year is still copping it on Twitter for his underwhelming total of six runs in the three-match series which ended in New Zealand earlier this week.

Most athletes would be tempted to give Twitter a miss for a few days, but Glenn Maxwell is happy to engage with his fans.

He light-heartedly called one a "jerk" after the fan mistakenly accused Maxwell of averaging one in New Zealand.

Maxwell says it's all a bit of fun and it helps him let off steam.

"I'm not too bad with it. I sort of thrive off that sort of stuff, just looking for something I can reply to," Victoria's Maxwell said ahead of Sunday's Sheffield Shield game against South Australia in Adelaide.

"I cop it on most days, which I expect. I generally sift through it each day and look for something funny I can reply to.

"Some guys don't have that tough skin to deal with that sort of stuff. I can understand why they get off Twitter.

"I actually really enjoy it. It's part of the game."

After enduring some spirited barracking in New Zealand, Maxwell is happy to read more of the same on social media.

"It's part of what you cop when you're out on the field anyway and I certainly copped it in New Zealand, that's for sure," the World Cup-winning all-rounder said.

"It's just trying to diffuse a situation and trying to bring some humour to it where there wasn't a whole lot of humour before."

Maxwell had scored 1-3-0-6-0 in Twenty20 and ODI games against India and New Zealand in the past few weeks.

"I haven't made a lot of runs in the last couple of digs but I don't feel out of form," Maxwell said today.

"I had the innings of my career (scoring 96 in an ODI against on January 17 at the MCG).

So it's pretty solid in my memory as well that I'm still hitting the ball as well as I ever have."
