KEY POINTS:
A world class but cash-strapped speed skater has listed himself on Trade Me in a bid to return to the international stage.
Peter Homburg of Palmerston North turned to the internet auction website to revive a budding career that is struggling through lack of sponsorship.
Listed in the "Sport, Other" category alongside swimming goggles, trampolines and netball bibs, the entry for a 22-year-old skater stands out.
"Basically I've tried to sell myself because I see myself as a really good marketing tool," Homburg said.
"I've been ranked top-10 in the world for three years in a row but over those years I've accumulated debt getting there.
"It's got to the point where I can't go to races so I've taken the year off and I've been trying to think of a way to get back into my sport."
It will take a minimum bid of $15,000 to get Homburg's service, effectively as advertising space.
For that the successful bidder will win exclusive endorsement and advertising rights until December next year, which Homburg hoped would include an appearance at next year's world championships and a number of other international events.
"I'm selling myself as a product and for $15,000 you're getting a lot," he said.
A holder of more than 20 national titles, the Massey University Sport and Recreation graduate listed himself on Sunday and the auction will last until at least May 7.
In the first 24 hours, Homburg had attracted 30 views but no bids.
"I sent out an email to family and friends so most of them (views) might be family and friends."
