Soccer: Waning Fury may strike a final blow

They may face an uncertain future but the North Queensland Fury still want to enjoy their final game of the season and ruin the Wellington Phoenix's future today.

The Phoenix need only a point at home to seal sixth spot on the A-League ladder but a loss would open the door for Newcastle to knock them out of the playoffs, should they beat Central Coast.

The financially troubled Fury are not guaranteed to survive beyond this season but vice-captain Gareth Edds said the club would make the most of the chance to test Wellington's nerve.

"Wellington have got to be under pressure," said Edds, who spent 13 years playing in England. "I've been in situations like that overseas and it's not an easy place to be in last game of the season; at home and you need to get a result to get in the top six.

"You're always looking over your shoulder at who else is around, so they're going to be under pressure."

Assistant coach Stuart McLaren, who is returning home to Scotland, admitted there was a sense of disappointment and concern over the club's future.

"I think we're all quite upset that the season has come to a close because we're nowhere near where we wanted to be in terms of our league position and obviously with the club's future still up in the air," McLaren said.

The Fury will be without suspended goalkeeper Justin Pasfield with Sebastian Usai starting.

Wellington skipper Andrew Durante misses the game due to a ban, but the Phoenix welcome back Ben Sigmund and Manny Muscat after they served suspensions in Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Sydney FC.
