KEY POINTS:
The Wellington Phoenix's A-League season is over after a 2-nil away loss to the Melbourne Victory.
The Phoenix needed victory to keep any hope of making the top four playoffs but a controversial first half penalty put the visitors on the back foot. A late Archie Thompson goal sealed the result.
Phoenix captain Andrew Durante says the team is disappointed.
"We thought we deserved a lot more out of that game. At first glance, the penalty, I thought, was quite soft. As soon as that went in, we were really chasing the game. We had to get two goals to get back in. We pushed everyone forward and we gave it everything but we came up a bit short."
Adelaide United needs to beat Central Coast by two goals to leapfrog Melbourne to take the minor premiership.
