Soccer: Phoenix has cheque book at the ready

The Wellington Phoenix are on the lookout for a new player from the A-League with the transfer window opening this morning.

Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata has not got anyone particular in mind but is keen to indulge in some window shopping. He says there have been no agent requests yet, but he will consider buying A-League players if the right ones are available.

All White Shane Smeltz is a likely big mover, with Gold Coast United facing an uphill battle to keep hold of the inform striker.
