Soccer: Phoenix accept Muscat's three-match ban

A-League soccer club Wellington Phoenix has accepted the three-match ban imposed on defender Manny Muscat.

The Phoenix yesterday decided against appealing the ban imposed by an A-League independent match review panel following the team's 1-4 loss to Brisbane Roar in Brisbane on Sunday.

Muscat was sent off early in the second half for elbowing opponent Tommy Oar in the head.

He was subsequently charged with violent conduct when not challenging for the ball.

Muscat will not be eligible for selection until the Phoenix's round 20 match against the Central Coast Mariners on December 31.

Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said club officials had closely examined the footage of the incident and, despite being initially concerned about the length of the ban, they accepted the panel's decision and would not lodge an appeal.

Meanwhile, the club has been asked by Federation Football Australia to explain the actions of some players following Muscat's dismissal.

The Phoenix have been charged with team misconduct after players allegedly showed dissent toward a match official.

A number of Phoenix players surrounded A-League debutant referee Alan Milliner after he gave Muscat his marching orders.

The Phoenix have until today to respond to the charge.
