Gareth Morgan has come up with his own way to entice fans to Phoenix games in Wellington by putting up a cash prize for a fan at their remaining home games.
Morgan, who is part of the Welnix consortium who own the Phoenix, yesterday threatened to take more home games away from the capital to other cities in New Zealand because of dwindling crowd numbers at Westpac Stadium.
Today he announced a draw would be made at halftime in each of Wellington's home games and, if there was someone sitting in the seat, they had the choice of ether winning $1000 cash or taking $800 themselves and donating $500 to Unicef New Zealand. The winner will also be invited to the Chairman's Lounge for the next home game. If the seat is not occupied, the cash will jackpot for the next home game.
Morgan said the initiative is a way to bring two of his passions together.
"I have been a Unicef NZ ambassador for many years now and am very passionate about the difference they make in the lives of children all over the world,'' he said. "The Phoenix is a new passion of mine and this idea is a way for me to bring these two great organisations together.''
