KEY POINTS:
It was a round of matches all goalkeepers would have dreaded.
In what is surely a record for the Hyundai A-League, at least one penalty was scored in all four matches with two having the ledger squared with both sides scoring from the spot.
For Perth Glory custodian Frank Juric, it was even worse. Not only did he have to watch as Joel Griffiths blasted home the match-opening goal for the Newcastle Jets in the 21st minute, he was then undone 29 minutes later when his captain Jamie Coyne succeeded in scoring an own goal to hand the visitors a 2-1 lead.
In between times, Adrian Trinidad had blasted home a penalty to get the Glory back to 1-1. In then battling back to 2-2 and later taking the lead 3-2 with nine minutes to play, Perth, who won only twice at home last season, were on course for a precious victory.
Not to be. Five minutes into added time Jets captain Jade North snatched the equaliser which gave his team their second draw in as many weeks.
No home teams took maximum points. Queensland Roar, at home for the first time after their opening 1-1 draw in Wellington, left Suncorp Stadium with just a point after a second 1-1 result. Travis Dodd gave visiting Adelaide United the lead after eight minutes when he beat Liam Reddy from the spot. Charlie Miller scored the equaliser 40 minutes later.
Steve Corica needed just six minutes to score for Sydney FC at Bluetongue Stadium, but Sasho Petrovski scored a penalty a minute later for the Central Coast Mariners.
Corica grabbed his second inside 15 minutes and Petrovski matched that in the 68th minute, but then Shannon Cole scored for the visitors.
In front of 6110 who braved the terrible Wellington weather - the smallest crowd of the round - the Phoenix scored one penalty but three minutes later gave one up. At 0-1 and 1-3 against a Melbourne Victory side being touted as likely champions, the hosts were always playing catch-up.
In going down 4-2, the Phoenix - who have already conceded more goals than their seven rivals - equalled their worst effort of last season when they lost 4-1 to Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium.
