Not a great 24 hours for Qatari football.
On a day when Fifa president Sepp Blatter resigned - which will prompt further questions about the hosting of the 2022 World Cup - their Under-20 team were thumped 4-0 by Portugal in Hamilton, to remain winless in the tournament.
Qatar weren't actually that bad but Portugal are top quality. They qualified second out of Europe and boast strong defenders, some gifted midfielders and plenty of pace and power up front. Captain Tomas, who plays at FC Porto, was particularly impressive along with speedy winger Gelson Martins.
The Europeans were dominant from the start and after several chances Andre Silva opened the scoring, after latching onto a lovely angled through ball. They extended their lead in the 42nd minute thanks to a brilliant bicycle kick from striker Ivo.
Qatar had to attack in the second half and came close on several occasions, with No10 Akram Afif the architect of their best moments. But Ivo made the game safe just after the hour with a towering header, climbing well above his marker at the far post, which prompted the Portuguese coach to clear his bench.
