HAMBURG, Germany (AP) Switzerland defender Johan Djourou needs groin surgery after being injured during Hamburger SV's pre-season training camp in Austria.
The Bundesliga club says the 26-year-old Djourou, who joined on loan from Arsenal in the offseason, will have the operation in Munich on Tuesday, ruling him out for at least two weeks.
Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer says "it is better to have the surgery now rather than wait until later in the new season."
Hamburg begins its Bundesliga campaign away to Schalke on Aug. 11.
The operation also makes Djourou doubtful for Switzerland's friendly against Brazil in Basel on Aug. 14. He has started all six of Switzerland's World Cup qualifiers. Switzerland leads Group E ahead of Albania.
