Waitakere City kept dreams of a fourth Chatham Cup triumph alive with a deserved come-from-behind 3-2 win over Central United at a windswept Fred Taylor Park yesterday.
Three goals in 20 minutes after going to the halftime break 0-1 down paved the way for the home team's victory in a contest which had the visitors playing the last few minutes one short when Central defender Greg Uhlmann was sent off by referee Steve Fletcher following a second yellow card.
Waitakere will be joined in the quarter-final draw by other former cup winners Manurewa and Miramar Rangers while Three Kings, upset winners over Lynn Avon, are a combination of former cup winners Eden (1950) and Mt Roskill (1964).
Dunedin Technical's hopes of a second triumph 10 years on from their first were dashed when beaten 3-0 by Caversham.
In another upset, Forrest Hill Milford, in seventh place on the United Soccer 1 premier table, beat Glenfield Rovers, 3rd in the same league, 5-2.
The much-anticipated Waitakere-Central clash reached no great heights in the first half, the only high point Milos Nikolic's stunning 30m strike from a freekick which dipped into the corner of Jason Mann's goal to give Central their 37th minute lead.
Halftime joy quickly turned to despair when a shot from ever-dangerous Roy Krishna deflected to Blair Konik who provided the clinical finish.
Within five minutes Waitakere hit the front when Keegan Linderboom mirrored Nikolic's earlier effort when he scored a dipping freekick.
Jake Butler increased the host's advantage with a simple header to a Linderboon cross for 3-1.
The visitors got one back through substitute Rory Kelly.
Veteran Stu Roberts scored twice in Manurewa's 3-1 home win over Metro.
Roberts' effort was matched by Kelly Elscombe who scored twice for Forrest Hill Milford in their win over Glenfield, Dominic Rowe, who scored first and last for Miramar in their 6-1 home win over Wellington United and Tom Jackson who netted the last two for Caversham.
