Juan A. Pepe Schiaffino, as he was known in Uruguay, has died in Montevideo at the age of 77.
Schiaffino's heyday was on July 16, 1950, when he helped to cause one of the greatest upsets in football history with one goal and breathtaking speed.
That evening in Rio de Janeiro, everyone packed into the hallowed Maracana were set to celebrate a Brazilian victory in the World Cup. In the second half, the hosts were leading, thanks to a goal from Friaca.
But in the 66th minute, Schiaffino appeared from nowhere to collect a pass from Alcides Ghiggia and score the equaliser with a brilliant angled shot, stunning the crowd into silence. Minutes later, Ghiggia would catapult the Uruguayans to their second title.
