The Brisbane Roar have already equalled a 74-year-old record for the longest unbeaten run by any team in Australian sport. On Saturday night against Perth at Suncorp Stadium they will seek to claim that record alone.
In coming from behind for an unlikely 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets at Ausgrid Stadium, the Roar stretched their unbeaten run to 35 matches since their 3-0 loss to Melbourne Victory on September 12 last year. It was their only loss of the season.
Since then they have won 22 and drawn 13 matches to equal the record set by Sydney rugby league club Eastern Suburbs - now the Sydney Roosters - who went 35 games without a loss in the 1930s.
While the club and players insist the record is not in their game plan, it has been noticeable in recent weeks they have been under pressure.
Since winning four straight at the start of the season, Brisbane have been held 2-2 by the Victory and 1-1 by the Wellington Phoenix and had to come from behind to edge the Jets, who went ahead in the first half through Ryan Griffiths. Henrique levelled the scores in the 57th minute. The winner, from substitute James Meyer, came seven minutes from time.
