An English punter who bet that his son would one day play for Manchester United won $NZ19,491 this week when Ryan Tunnicliffe made his debut for the Reds in the Capital One Cup.
Tunnicliffe came on as a 77th minute substitute in United's 2-1 Cup win over Newcastle yesterday and turned his fathers $NZ194 investment into a big pay day.
When the 19-year old midfielder was nine, his father placed a £100 bet at odds of 100-1 that he would one day run out as a United first team player.
That was the same age Tunnicliffe had first been scouted by United and, after being sent out on loan at Peterborough last season fought his way back into the first team squad. His appearance at Old Trafford against Newcastle was his first for the Reds after progressing through the academy and then signing as a scholar.
His father was one of 46,358 at the game to see his bet come in.
