"As co-coaches, Paul Temple and myself are also keen to get started at the business end of our dual roles," Shelley said.
Roy Krishna and Ryan de Vries helped guide Waitakere to a record fourth consecutive title under former coach Paul Marshall but now the pair have swapped white and red for navy blue in the biggest transfer switch of the off-season.
"We've lost Roy and Ryan but we've recruited players of good quality and our general philosophy hasn't changed we're still looking to play good, exciting, attractive football," Shelley added.
Krishna and de Vries are among a raft of new signings for Auckland City that includes former Everton player John Irving, striker Rory Turner and midfield man Cristobal Marquez Crespo.
Coach Ramon Tribulietx is hoping for a positive start to the campaign.
"It's the first competitive game of the season and both teams may not be at their best but it's a cup final and we'd like to win it.
"In a way we don't know what to expect as Waitakere have new players and a new coaching team so there are question marks there.
"But we will be organised and focus on ourselves rather than our opponents and try to be as competitive as we can be," Tribulietx said.
Cup-holders Waitakere have made changes of their own to stem the exodus with foundation year striker Richard Cardozo making a return to the club after ten years away.
The former Australia U-17 international last turned out for the West Aucklanders in 2004-05 season and in between stints has appeared for Rockdale City Suns, Hume City and former NSL outfit Sydney United.
Joining Cardozo at Fred Taylor Park are Scottish duo Jordan Lowdon and Sam French, while the new co-coach team of Paul Temple and Brian Shelley have also clinched ex-Team Wellington defender Alec Solomons to bolster their defence.
Lowdon, a midfielder, was plucked from Queensland State League outfit Peninsula Power while compatriot French played as a striker with Avondale Heights in Victoria.
ASB Premiership all-time top scorer Allan Pearce has retired so the onus to grab goals falls to Cardozo, and French.
All Whites defender Ian Hogg returns to Waitakere United and midfielder Sansern Limwatthana makes his ASB Premiership breakthrough after turning out for Central United during the winter months.
The third ASB Charity Cup Final is more poignant with this the first Super City derby since the sad passing of former Auckland City, Waitakere United and South Africa striker Keryn Jordan.
Jordan turned out for both clubs during a long and successful career in New Zealand where he held the competition's all-time scoring record up until Pearce overtook him last year.
