KEY POINTS:
North Shore United's chance to write another chapter in Chatham Cup folklore lives on. But only just.
Pitted against second division Te Atatu and with home advantage in one of 16 northern second round matches, North Shore pulled off one of the great Houdini acts to win.
Down by a goal after 14 minutes and trailing by the same margin with just four minutes to play, the home side hit the panic button, scored three and trooped off to the sheds, stunning 3-1 winners on the back of late goals from Sheldon Pillay, Tenji Nakamura and Jeff Campbell.
Other northern premier league sides did not fare so well.
On the scrapheap after just one cup outing are Tauranga City United, Bay Olympic, Waitakere City, Onehunga Sports and Birkenhead United.
Bay Olympic went out to middle of the table first division Papatoetoe 2-1 in one upset.
Birkenhead departed by the same score to Mt Albert Grammar in another.
Mt Albert Grammar hit the front after 66 minutes when impressive central defender and captain Ash Solly headed home a Skye Parmenter freekick.
The visitors got back to 1-1 11 minutes later when Mikael Munday headed home from open play.
Zane Sole's penalty in the 81st minute - after a hand ball - earned the home side their victory.
Tauranga found the trip to first division Mangere - relegated at the end of the last season - beyond them going down 1-0 while Waitakere City too bowed out to a first division club.
Level 2-2 at fulltime away to Metro, Waitakere missed a penalty early in extra time.
Metro won the shootout 3-1 to retain their season-long unbeaten record.
Premiers Glenfield Rovers had a huge scare on their trip south.
After 120 minutes at Matamata Domain had failed to produce a goal, Glenfield ended Matamata Swifts' hopes 4-2 in the penalty shootout.
Onehunga Sports were never in it in the all-premier league affair against Central United at Waikaraka Park. Down 0-3 at halftime, Onehunga lost 7-1 with Dave Richmond and Jason Hayne each nabbing a hat-trick.
They were upstaged, however, by 15-year-old Chris Wood who scored four for Hamilton Wanderers in their 6-1 home win over Kaikohe.
Last year's finalists Eastern Suburbs got a 6-0 away win over Mt Albert Ponsonby with Glen Eie scoring two.
Two-time Cup-winners Manurewa won through to the third round with their 4-0 away win over Cambridge while, in an upset, first division leaders Lynn Avon United were beaten 2-0 at home by Melville United in extra time.
