Soccer: Newcomers start with loss

The Central Coast Mariners have opened the new A-League season by beating expansion franchise the Melbourne Heart 1-0 in Melbourne.

Mariners defender Alex Wilkinson scored the winner - just his second goal in 112 A-League games.

Over 11,000 fans turned up for the Heart's inaugural match - this despite the city of Melbourne already hosting the successful Melbourne Victory.

The Wellington Phoenix have an opening week bye.
