The All Whites skipper completed his free transfer from Blackburn to Tottenham last week and manager Harry Redknapp immediately put him into his squad as they look to put the pressure on league leaders Manchester City and Manchester United.
Spurs started the match with Ledley King and Michael Dawson at centre-back.
Controversial Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is also on the bench after serving an eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
