The 3-1 win by the Football Kingz over Marconi Stallions was just one of three upsets in 10th-round NSL action.
Defending champions Perth Glory were tipped over 2-1 by the Wollongong Wolves who went into the round just one place ahead of the Kingz at the foot of the table.
In Brisbane, the Strikers scored their fourth win of the season, beating Parramatta Power who started the day in second place.
All 13 teams have now had at least two losses.
In scoring three well-taken goals against Marconi from set play, the Kingz took their tally to 10 - more than five of the teams above them have managed.
South Melbourne warmed up for this Sunday's clash with the Kingz with a 2-1 home win over Adelaide United.
An early Brendan Santalab goal was enough to get Sydney United home 1-0 away to Northern Spirit.
Wollongong scored their second boilover in as many weeks with their win over Perth at WIN Stadium. Stuart Young put the home side ahead after just four minutes. They increased their lead nine minutes into the second spell through Nigerian striker Chimaobi Nwagazi.
With 20 minutes to play Damian Mori pulled one back for Perth.
The loss was a double blow for the defending champions who also lost Matt Horsley to a knee injury.
Two late goals earned Brisbane a 4-2 victory over a Parramatta team long touted as championship contenders.
The visitors went ahead with a simple Ante Milicic header after 11 minutes. Brisbane levelled before halftime through Warren Moon.
Parramatta went ahead again when Fernando Rech scored a classy goal. That advantage was short-lived as substitute Joshua Rose capitalised on a fumble from Parramatta goalkeeper Clint Bolton to equalise.
Rose then scored a second for 3-2 before Luke Morley completed the scoring in the last minute.
Sydney Olympic won 1-0 away to Newcastle United with an 85th-minute Zenon Caravella goal.
