Allan Jones is leaving NZFC champions Auckland City at the end of this season.
The former All Whites coach is in negotiations about moving to another club and told his team after training on Thursday that he would not be staying.
His tenure will be extended slightly if Auckland qualify for the Oceania qualifying tournament of the World Club Champs.
Auckland chairman Ivan Vuksich said he is disappointed the club could not convince Jones to stay.
"He's the most professional and successful coach we've ever had at Kiwitea St and his achievements here speak for themselves," said Vuksich.
Jones has been a professional football coach for almost 40 years and worked extensively in the Middle East before returning to New Zealand three years ago.
Jones coached Auckland to the inaugural NZFC title last season and the club is again a strong contender this year.
Auckland topped the table until consecutive defeats and will be aiming to avoid a third straight loss this afternoon in Wellington.
In other games today, leaders Manawatu play Waikato in Mt Maunganui and third-placed Canterbury host Waitakere.
* A first-half goal from All Whites squad member Blair Scoullar helped Otago to a 1-0 win at Hawke's Bay yesterday. The win lifts Otago to fourth.
