An in form Newcastle Jets have stretched their unbeaten run in soccer's A-League to seven matches with a 2-0 win over top-three side the Gold Coast last night (NZT).
The Jets, who have now climbed to fifth on the ladder with their third straight win, created chances from the get go against a Gold Coast outfit that lacked firepower.
But it was midfielder Ali Abbas who broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season with Sasho Petrovski netting the late winner.
Not even 10 minutes had passed before Newcastle had their first chance when midfielder Abbas misfired.
But it was former Arsenal and Everton striker Francis Jeffers who had the 8046 faithful at EnergyAustralia stadium on the edge of their seats with two golden opportunities in the space of just 60 seconds.
His first came in the 24th minutes when he met with a ball from Marko Jesic to find himself in a one-on-one with `keeper Glen Moss who safely cleared the effort.
Only seconds later the Englishman weaved his way through the Gold Coast defence to force a great save from their Kiwi gloveman.

Italian import Marcello Fiorentini attempted a long range effort about 10 minutes before the break with Jesic also getting in the action, his shot going just wide of the far post.
The Jets came back from the break fired up with Abbas looking like scoring just two minutes in and he came close for the Jets when his shot struck the cross-bar to land just on the line.
Striker Bruce Djite had the only real chance for the Gold Cost with his powerful strike forcing a great save from Jets gloveman Matthew Nash in the 69th minute.
But it was Abbas who finally broke through for the Jets in the 76th minute with a beautiful strike.
Petrovski then sealed the deal, volleying the ball into the back of the net in the 82nd minute.
In what was a fiery encounter Ljubo Milicevic was sent off in the 77th minute after getting his second yellow card of the match when he brought down Joel Porter.
