Hat-tricks for Ryan de Vries and Michael Gwyther paved the way as three North Harbour clubs charged into the Chatham Cup quarter-finals with emphatic fourth-round victories.
De Vries bagged all three as Forrest Hill Milford beat Albany United 3-1. It was the same story yesterday with Gwyther scoring all the goals for Glenfield Rovers as they too saw off another United Soccer 1 club Birkenhead 3-1 at McFetridge Park.
In the match of the round, 2008 winners East Coast Bays scored two second-half goals to lead last year's beaten finalist Three Kings United 2-0 before holding on for 2-1 when Robbie Greenhalgh got one back for the home side eight minutes from time.
In the other northern match-up, Bay Olympic turned a 1-0 halftime lead into an eventual 3-1 home win over three-time cup-winners Waitakere City.
Yoji Tanabe claimed Bay Olympic's opening goal inside five minutes. They held that advantage to the break. Craig Wylie doubled that lead with a superb free kick before Keegan Linderboom, who had a strong game for Waitakere, got one back for the visitors. But that was not enough as Joe Edwards claimed a third for the home side.
In a bizarre call from referee Mark Vincent, Damien Fonoti (Waitakere) and Ross McKenzie (Bay Olympic) were sent off.
De Vries, who played for Waitakere United in the New Zealand Football Championship, put Forrest Hill Milford 2-0 ahead at the break before adding a third. Albany's only reply came from a Jason Hicks penalty as the home side ended the match one short following Sheldon Pillay's dismissal.
Gwyther too scored twice in the first half and added his third after the break. Robbie Lee got one back for visiting Birkenhead.
After a scoreless first half George Suri and Mauri Wasi took East Coast Bays to a comfortable 2-0 lead as they kept their hopes of a second Cup triumph alive.
They will be joined in tomorrow's quarter-final draw by three-time winners Miramar Rangers who beat another former winner Napier City Rovers 2-1 after leading 1-0 at halftime.
Western (Christchurch), who won the last of their three cups in 1955, missed the chance to shoot for a fourth when beaten 4-3 on penalties by Ferrymead Bays after they had finished locked 1-1 after extra time when the first 90 minutes had failed to produce a goal.
Emilano Tade joined the hat-trick heroics as Wellington United beat Upper Hutt City 4-0 away, Caversham's Tom Jackson also banged in three for Caversham in their 8-2 romp over Roslyn Wakari.
Claudelands Rovers still have the chance to go one better than last year's loser's medals in the Women's Knockout Cup following their 3-1 away win over Eastern Suburbs.
In the second of the northern quarter-finals, the Three Kings women succeeded where their men had failed 24 hours earlier with an upset 2-0 win over Glenfield Rovers. Goals either side of the break to Tess Burger and Emma Kete got the home side through.
