Ryan Giggs is considering another season as a player at Manchester United after receiving no assurances over the coaching role under a new manager at Old Trafford.
Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal remains the favoured choice to succeed David Moyes, despite Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola raising doubts over his future at the Allianz Arena yesterday. Although Guardiola called for a decision on whether he was the "right coach for the club" in the wake of criticism from Bayern legend Franz Beckenbauer, there is no sense within United that he could become available and thus a managerial candidate this summer.
With Giggs acting as interim manager at United until the end of the season, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is aiming to tie up an agreement with van Gaal before the middle of next week to let the 62-year-old focus on Holland's preparations for the World Cup.
Van Gaal's determination to bring up to five backroom staff to United has placed a question mark over Giggs's role under the Dutchman, with the 40-year-old understood to be unwilling to accept a minor position. But having impressed as a player during his sporadic appearances in the team under Moyes - his last appearance was against Bayern in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on April 1 - Giggs has refused to discount the possibility of extending his playing career into a 25th season by staying at United for another year.
The Welshman has no plans to play on for another club, but with Woodward unable to confirm a prominent position under Van Gaal, Giggs admits he may yet continue as a player at United. "I'm constantly speaking to Ed, but developments change all the time," Giggs said. "At the moment, he's just letting me get on with doing the best I can on the training pitch and preparing the team for winning the next three games.
