The almost-certain demise of financially troubled Carlton in the National Soccer League is bad news for the five clubs, including the Football Kingz, who have won a point or points from the Melbourne-based club this season.
Soccer Australia said yesterday that Carlton's survival hopes were slim.
If they withdrew from the league, teams who drew with or beat them would lose points. Withdrawal would create a bye each week.
At the same time, it appears their players have become free agents, fuelling suggestions that All Whites Sean Douglas and Mark Atkinson will chase contracts with the Kingz.
"We have some interest in these players," said Kingz general manager Chris Turner.
"But, as we have said all along, we have spent this season's budget. We may, however, look at taking an advance from next year's budget if we feel that is necessary."
Turner said the club could look at on-selling some players already on its books, but that was not an option at present.
It is understood Douglas will be back in Auckland soon for talks with the Kingz.
Douglas, a defender, and midfielder Atkinson would have been contenders to join the All Whites for the now-aborted Indian tournament in January.
