KEY POINTS:
Tournament favourites Brazil turned up with their full bag of tricks, scored within the opening 10 seconds and went on to hand a bewildered New Zealand team an embarrassing 7-0 loss in their opening match at the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in Seogwipo, South Korea.
It was far from the start coach Colin Tuaa and his team wanted and left them facing a must-win second-round game against England tomorrow.
The English, in their first appearance at the under-17 championships, gave up a late goal to finish 1-1 with North Korea.
"The boys are pretty disappointed because we didn't give our best game," said goalkeeper Jacob Gleeson, one of only a couple of New Zealand players to emerge with much credit.
"But we will definitely come out all guns blazing [against England] and hopefully get a result and a performance we can be proud of."
A shell-shocked Tuaa admitted he hadn't foreseen his boys slumping to the second-worst scoreline by a New Zealand team on the international stage.
Only the 13-0 hiding the national under-16s were handed by Spain in Egypt 10 years ago is worse.
"Obviously that first goal [after nine seconds] hit us quite hard," said Tuaa, "but having said that, that's the worst we've ever defended. We've probably been written off even more now but our World Cup is not over. It will be a big job to lift them mentally but we've just got to look at the reasons behind what went wrong and then move forward - quickly."
