Bay Olympic have been left to fly the Auckland flag after yesterday's absorbing round of ASB Chatham Cup quarter-finals.
Northern clubs had the chance of a shut-out across the country but in the end only Bay Olympic, last season's beaten finalists, survived. Their triumph in the deep south was not without the touch of dramatic however as they needed a penalty shootout to end Dunedin Technical's bid for a second Cup.
Aaron Burgess scored the home side's 84th minute equaliser and then twice in extra time to take it to the shootout. A crucial Danny Robinson save of the host's fourth penalty swung it Bay Olympic's way.
Tech will be joined in tomorrow's semifinal draw by fellow Dunedin club Caversham who shrugged off a questionable Waikaraka Park pitch to dump Onehunga Sports 4-0 with the home team ending the match with just eight players while the visitors were down to 10.
Paul Day was sent off after just 21 minutes and was joined in the early showers by Reece Day and Scott Foster while Caversham's Ant Hancock - one of their scorers - also failed to see it through after being dismissed for a dangerous tackle.
Napier City Rovers emerged from the carnage as the only former Cup-winner to survive but they were taken to extra time at home by two-time Cup-winners Manurewa who led 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 after 54 minutes, dipped out as Stu Wilson booted home a 59th minute penalty and scored the equaliser 12 minutes later. Matt Single ensured Rovers progress with his 104th minute winner.
Waitakere City were never in it as they went down to Wairarapa United in Carterton. A goal behind inside five minutes and by 2-1 at halftime after Keegan Linderboom had levelled the scores on the half hour, Waitakere bowed out when they conceded two unanswered second-half goals.
