Australia is a step closer to joining the Asia Soccer Federation.
The Federation has agreed to bring Australia on board, which means the Oceania soccer setup will be left with just New Zealand and a few Pacific Islands.
Oceania and FIFA still have to approve the shift.
Former Australian captain Alex Tobin says the move makes sense in terms of Australia's qualifying path for the World Cup.
Tobin says that instead of a one-off game against a South American team to make it, at least in Asia they get to play several top class matches and improve along the way.
It is unclear when or if the ok will be given by Oceania and FIFA.
