GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) Schalke midfielder Marco Hoeger has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a partial rupture of the cruciate ligament in his right knee.
The Bundesliga club says in a statement that the 24-year-old Hoeger, who sustained the injury in Saturday's 3-2 win at Eintracht Braunschweig, was to undergo an operation Monday.
Hoeger is the second Schalke player at the Hessingpark Clinic in Augsburg after Netherlands striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar underwent on operation Monday morning for his right knee ligament tear.
The club says Dr. Ulrich Boenisch's procedure went well and that Huntelaar will be out "as expected" until the Bundesliga's winter break.
Huntelaar hasn't played since Schalke's 4-0 away loss to Wolfsburg on Aug. 17.
