SANTA CLARA, California (AP) Chris Wondolowski scored as the San Jose Earthquakes edged CD Heredia of Guatemala 1-0 and Sporting Kansas City held on for a 0-0 draw with CD Olimpia of Honduras on Wednesday as the two U.S. clubs advanced to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.
Wondolowski's 62nd-minute volley left all three teams in Group 5 San Jose, Heredia and the Montreal Impact equal on six points. The Earthquakes, making their CCL debut, advanced on superior goal differential.
Heredia, needing only a draw to advance, took a defensive formation into the game and held firm for more than an hour despite San Jose having the vast majority of possession.
Major League Soccer's reigning Most Valuable Player, Wondolowski scored the clincher after Heredia failed to deal with Steven Beitashour's cross from the right wing and found him unmarked at the back post.
Heredia went on the attack and had chances to equalize, but Charles Cordova was ruled offside after finding the back of the net in the 86th.
