BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) Pele will soon travel to Iraq to meet with sports leaders in the region as part of a plan organized by a Brazilian legislator who is a robust supporter of next year's World Cup in Brazil.
Congressman Vicente Candido said Wednesday that Pele would travel at the end of August or in early September.
Candido handled the so-called World Cup law last year in the Brazilian legislature. The law, which is being challenged in the country's supreme court, gives FIFA the guarantees needed to organize the World Cup. Brazil's federal prosecutor says it's unlawful in Brazilian law as it gives FIFA tax exemptions.
Candido says Pele is going as "great ambassador" of Brazilian football.
