ROME (AP) Italy's foreign minister has urged her Polish counterpart to take all possible measures to free two dozen Lazio fans who were detained in Warsaw last week for allegedly attacking police vans ahead of the team's Europa League match against Legia Warsaw.
Italy's ambassador to Poland was to meet with the Polish justice minister Tuesday, and on Monday the ambassador met with the undersecretary to press Polish authorities to at least allow the fans' families to visit.
Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski had promised to take "personal interest" in the case. She is seeking at least provisional release of the fans ahead of any possible charges or trial.
Poland has a problem with football hooligans and police often step up their presence for big games.
