MOSCOW (AP) Guus Hiddink left his post as coach of Russia's Anzhi Makhachkala on Monday, just a month after signing a contract extension.
The team announced that he will be replaced by Rene Meulensteen, who joined the staff this month from Manchester United.
Hiddink's contract was renewed for one year in June, but Anzhi subsequently got off to a stuttering start in the Russian Premier League season drawing with Lokomotiv and losing to Dinamo.
The team said the change came at Hiddink's request.
In a statement on Anzhi's website, Hiddink said "I always said that my mission at Anzhi could end when the club was able to develop and grow on its own, without my participation. Now that time has come."
